Airlines flights are delayed and cancelled in the US for a variety of reasons. Some of these reasons are beyond the airlines control such as bad weather but many of the reasons are indeed partly or wholly as a result of a decision the airline made due to lack of crew to operate a flight. Never the less what ever the reasons no one wants to be on the receiving end of a elongated delay or cancellation on the return leg home. The misery of traveling with young kids is excaorcibated on hearing the dire news - "Flight Cancelled or Delayed".

Some airlines and airports are unfortunately more prone to cancellations and delays. LGA and JFK on the East coast are experts due to weather patterns as are the Chicago airports. In 2022 the major airports were amongst the top to suffer delays. Newark Liberty International Airport

Keep in mind that many of these airports are also airline hubs and if you are connecting through one of these airports there is an increased risk of your onward connection being at missed, specially if it was a tight connection to begin with.

Given delays and cancelations will happen based on a number of factors listed above. Having peace of mind and not having to be solely reliant on the airline to execute on their documented policy for handling delays and cancellations. It may be worth investment in a travel insurance policy that covers most of the eventualities and takes away the financial headache during the disruption. There are some very good trip insurance providers on the market and accessible online.
